Help decide for house in Hang Dong or Nong Chong San Sai (DIYA Valley or Land & houses Chonlada) Hey guys I"m moving from bangkok to chiang mai and i'm torn between choosing 2 houses. One is it Hang Dong in the DIYA valley village, we have a car and motorbike and think this place could be interesting to reach the stores in Suthep especially by Motorbike which would be easier to explore the small coffees and stores there. And having a smaller time needed to go up the mountain and explore mountain stores. However we read that overall Hang Dong is not so great and could be boring, food deliveries might be restricted (we like to order here n there). Commute to old city, chang phuak and East city seems fine overall and similar enough with the house in the Chonlada village in Nong Chong San Sai, slightly shorter if we choose that place. However it seems like living in Chonlada village, we have more access to restaurants and stores? I think the benefit living there is slightly shorter commute where it matters to hop or shop around? While however going to Suthep to west side of the airport might be longer and not ideal for motorbike and would have more likely to take out the car? being in Chonlada gives also another access to the mountain side of the west compared to hang dong. but it would also perhaps give more access to whats on the East side of chiang mai and its mountain which i have never explored and dont know what would be there. We would love to hear from you guys on those 2 areas and what your experience in chiang mai is on where you spend most time hanging around and which side (west or east) of the mountains are more fun to explore with cute coffee stores on the mountains. We are in our late 20 and early 30s. 1 car 1 motorbike and about to sign the contract starting in july Cheers!

Chiang Mai is not that big compared to Bangkok. Including the traffic you could drive from one of those locations to the other in 20mins or less. It is also basically in the bottom of a valley and surrounded by mountains on both sides so in either location you will be 20 mins or less also from mountainous areas and retreats. In the south most people will go out towards Mae Wang for their hiking and mountain adventures and from the north you would go to Mae Taeng or similar. There are lots of places up on Doi Suthep and towards Samoeng to the west that would be about equidistant to either of the spots you asked about. The communities themselves will be different based on in a moobaan or not and if the bulk of the neighbors are Thai or expats but you would have to spend a little time walking around the neighborhood to determine that. If the houses you are looking at are in “communities” of any sort then unlikely that you will find a lot of cafes and restaurants within a short walk as the communities are more like suburbs vs living “in the village”. Everything is very accessible via car or motorbike though and food delivery is very abundant via Grab.

Hang Dong will win hands down if you are looking to explore and find lovely little places for coffee and an afternoon out. We have big dogs and love the outdoors and even after 4 years we still found many little nooks all along the Samoeng Road. And yet all modern conveniences were closed by. And our kids when they visit love going into the hills for birding or for strawberry picking etc. san sai to me sound dull and drab when I check with friends who know the place.

I live in L&H san sai. You need to understand first, L&H park here is quite big, it comprises of many villages inside. That is meaning, it is so quiet inside compared to other small villages. Judges from google maps i think DIYA hang dong is quite further away from town compares to L&H. Commuter to downtown/city area is fine from san sai especially if you are traveling not in a rush hour. But I seconds to other comments that you should come to check out vibes by yourself.
