Mill Hill

Your move to get the iPGGE is a good one and a necessity for international schools. That said, Tier 1 schools would not accept this without the fully qualified status gained in the UK . You are better off applying to tier 2 and 3 imo. There are definitely schools that would hire with iPGCE alone but it will be more challenging. I know several teachers in Chiang Mai hired with an IPGCE. A 'specific degree' is more relevant based on what you plan to teach. Do you want to be a primary generalist or teach something like secondary econ? Your salary is location dependent. Bangkok pays significantly more than Chiang Mai. The range varies drastically between schools and location. Most schools are hiring their first round in Nov through Dec, with a second round after Christmas break. It's possible to get something in February if a role has not yet been filled or a teacher has to back out of a contract. You could also try to sub at a school for the remainder of the year with the hopes that your connections and experience there would lead to a contract the following AY. Sometimes Feb hiring is based on being at the right place at the right time. Good luck!

Teaching in Thailand recommendations- I’m currently leaning towards Chiang Mai Hello everyone. First time poster here. Quick bit of background- Brit (38M) I have been teaching English in Shanghai for a number of years now and I am looking for a long overdue change of scenery. I’ve loved visiting Thailand on numerous occasions previously and I’ve heard Chiang Mai has lots of International schools. I have a BA, PGCE and Tefl. I am planning a trip there in October to see the lay of the land but I just have a few questions… 1- regarding the air quality (all I have been reading is it’s horrendous) does this affect daily school life? 2-Work life balance in Chiang Mai, is there a friendly expat scene. 3- Salaries are high in Shanghai so I am expecting a lower package. What would be a decent monthly take home to live a comfortable not extravagant lifestyle. Any information about schools, or general day to day to day life in Chiang Mai would be greatly appreciated as I begin to look at my next career move.

Yeah i think someone already said this but one thing to consider is about 3 months of the year Chiang Mai has really bad air pollution due to burning season (farmers burning crops) That put me and my partner off Chiang Mai, she actually studied there for 4 years but didn't want to live there long term due to that. Very frustrating cause it is a amazing city that has basically everything you would want.

There are really only two good international schools in Chiang Mai (and several so-so "bilingual" schools), and since it is a highly desirable location, competition for the few available spots each year is pretty intense. I've been trying to get a job there for the past 2 years. The truth about salaries is that, even with IB experience and a teacher's license from your home country, you likely won't make more than $90k Baht without a Master's. Because so many people want to live and teach there, schools feel they can low-ball teachers. But even $60k per month would allow you to live a very decent lifestyle in Chiang Mai, so long as you don't go out drinking in the Old City every night and getting "special" massages.

International schools have teachers who specialized in ELA. But often times, students are taught primarily in English from kindergartens onwards. They are all perfectly fluent (nominally).

Prem and Panyaden, as were both mentioned earlier in the thread. Unity Concord and Nakornpayap seem to be alright, but I've not visited them or had an interview with them.

It goes beyond just language fluency. The schools also often use either the American common core curriculum, UK’s A-levels, or the IB curriculum. So all subject classes are also taught in English. The idea is to prep them for an overseas university. To put it simply, you can think of it as plucking a school from a western country and plopping it down into whatever country it’s in (for a hefty fee of course).

I live in Chiang Mai, and my partner is from here. After 4 years, we've decided to call it in. We had moved here from Bangkok, but at this point, anything is better than here. Chiang Mai has become unlivable. I've got a persistent cough (I only smoke weed), and my dog now has asthma. She also had a heart attack a few days ago, but we don't know if it's related. But know that the animal hospital is packed with dogs with all sorts of issues rn. Same with hospitals. It's a fking mess up here. 0/10 would not recommend to anyone. Avoid.

I lived in Chiang Mai for 13 years. In terms of expat scenes: there’s quite a lot, though I’ve noticed most of the long term expats are older. I lived there from 19-32 and it was difficult to maintain a friend group because people were always coming and going. It was easier when I was in school in Bangkok to meet more people my age. The burning season is terrible. If your school’s summer break starts in March, you can at least avoid a month of it till it clears up closer to April. Feb/March is the worst. Eating outside sucks, it’s hot, and if you have a motorbike, you’re gonna have a cough for two months. If you have a car, enjoy daily traffic jams. I was lucky enough to be working in Southern Thailand during February and then took March off and hung out on the beaches till Songkran, but that’s not realistic for everyone. Chiang Mai has changed a lot. Some for the better, some not so much. Towards the end of living there (I left in 2017), it had lost its small town vibe. A lot of Bangkok developers have come in and built more malls, awesome areas like Nimanheimin have become high end hipster spots instead of the old college town and cool club vibes. The burbs on the outskirts can be nice depending on the mubaan. The upside is there’s a lot better international food than there used to be. I still spend a couple days a year there up till Covid and felt exhausted with Chiang Mai and always got excited to visit the in-laws in Chiang Rai. Great things about CM is great food, it’s easy to get around and visit other awesome areas: Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Lampang. Northern Thailand is known for being friendly and laid back as well.
AdvantagePlus4711
If you want to live in northern Thailand, and as the air quality in CM is so bad, I would recommend that you look into Phitsanulok. It's the biggest city in the lower North, and there are some international schools. I live in Sukhothai and Phitsanulok is the big city we go to if there's anything, so sadly I don't know anything about the expat scene there. And sure, PM2.5 is high here too as we are in the northern part of Thailand, but now we have 65ug/m³ compared to 150ug/m³ in CM and 190ug/m³ in Chiang Rai. So it's still high, but it's more livable...
