   Notice: Border run to Laos (via Huay Xai) now requires two day stay before returning to Thailand. For anyone doing the border run from northern Thailand (closest land crossing to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai) you can no longer turn around and immediately get back on the bus back to Thailand after getting your Laos stamp/visa. They are now requiring a two day stay in Laos before returning. When you do come back you need to have proof of 10,000 bhat, T30 and proof of exit (flight info). I did this run 3 months ago and it was not in effect back then. Not sure if this is just this crossing or all land crossings. I read some comments that say it’s shady and the head of the immigration here must be getting some kind of cut from the Laos side. No idea the truth of that but I do know there are signs everywhere and all the agents and peripheral businesses act like this is the new normal. The guy that runs the daily van from Chiang Mai says he can still get you in and out the same day because he’s so connected in there and that’s his whole business but again, can’t say for sure. All I know is I’m spending an unexpected two days in Laos, which is fine, just wish I planned for it better so that’s why I’m telling you.

      I just read an article on a Thai visa service site that says they are cracking down on the land border runs (only two per year, which I knew about) because they want people to buy apply and pay for a long term visa. The article doesn’t mention the two day requirement but I’m sure it’s connected. Good news is air travel is unaffected by this policy and you can still come back in without any hindrance.

      Just to clarify, if you have a long term visa you're fine. I have a marriage visa and have done two border runs this year.

      I saw that but it’s just anecdotal stories from individual an individual border agent that they may or may have not paid off. There’s no actual policy they’re pointing to.

      2 land entry per year policy was officially removed in july… so this is just an individual land border point creating problems.

   Traveling from Chiang Mai to Laos for visa run via bus; any suggestions? First time doing this. Leaving by bus tonight and arriving around 7am tomorrow in Udon Thani. I've heard you can just grab a tuk tuk or taxi once at the border and they will take you to Laos immigration. I'm sure I could just go with the flow and be fine, but if anybody has some pro-tips or suggestions I'd appreciate it.

      Bring money in USD for the visa and pay with thb in Laos, kip are worthless and you won't be able to exchange them back.

      To add to that, always take an additional US$1 over the visa fee, they always seem to add an out of regular hours or some such other charge.

      You should be able to get a bus or van to the border or near to it. I've only ever caught a bus from the airport but there would likely be one going from the bus station as well. It's a bit of a hike - about an hour by highway so it will be cheaper in a bus or shared van.

      Van from Udon airport to the border costs 200 baht. Forget tuktuks or taxis. Not sure but that a similar van might be available from the bus station.
