Visa Run from Chiang Mai: Border, Flight or Extension
A visa-exempt visitor may enter through land-border checkpoints not more than twice per calendar year. The limit does not generally apply to arrivals by air, but officers may refuse frequent entrants. The alternative is one extension of up to 30 days at Chiang Mai Immigration.
On this page

A visa-exempt visitor who enters through a land-border checkpoint may do so not more than twice per calendar year. A run from Chiang Mai to Mae Sai (แม่สาย) and back therefore uses up one of two land entries. Compare the three ways to restart or extend a stay before you book anything.
Border run, flight or extension: how they compare
Each exempt entry gives a stay of not more than thirty days for tourism. What differs is the limit that sits on each route.
| Route | What the rules say |
|---|---|
| Land-border run | Land entries not more than twice per calendar year |
| Flight out and back | UK government: the land restriction does not generally apply to arrivals by air; frequent entrants may be refused |
| Extension at Chiang Mai Immigration | Up to 30 days, applied for before the stay ends, at the officer’s discretion; fee THB 1,900 |
An extension adds days without crossing anything. A flight is not capped in the same way, but officers may refuse a frequent entrant. A land run counts against the cap.
The land-border cap and who it covers
The cap comes from article 3 of a Ministry of Interior announcement in the Royal Gazette, and it applies from 15 September 2026. Count the entries you make from that date.

Editor’s translation: Where entering via land-border checkpoints, entry is allowed not more than twice per calendar year.
Ministry of Interior announcement, Royal Gazette Vol. 143, Special Issue 207 Ngor, 31 August 2026, article 3 (ข้อ ๓)
Two groups are outside the cap. Nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore are excepted. So are nationals of other countries that the Minister designates.
Visitors admitted before 15 September 2026 under the previous measures may stay until the granted period expires. The exemption guide has the dates.

Arrivals by air
Visa-exempt entry for tourism through land-border checkpoints is normally limited to 2 entries per calendar year, and this restriction does not generally apply to arrivals by air. The Gazette article above names land-border checkpoints only.

An air arrival is not capped, but the officer sees your passport stamps. Frequent entrants may be asked for onward travel, accommodation or funds, and may be refused if the officer believes they are not a genuine visitor. Keep a booked onward ticket, an address and bank evidence on your phone for every entry.
What the officer asks at the border
These are the checks for visa-exempt entry.

- Proof of accommodation, and proof of onward travel scheduled within 30 days of arrival.
- Cash of or equivalent to THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family. Plan on the THB 20,000 figure.
- Further documents at the officer’s discretion, or an interview.
- The Thailand Digital Arrival Card, completed online within 3 days before arrival.
The TDAC is submitted for every entry, so a run means a new card each time. The TDAC guide has the steps.

If an officer refuses entry
Section 12 of the Immigration Act excludes an alien who has no appropriate means of living after entering the Kingdom. Where an officer finds an alien barred under Section 12, the officer may order the alien in writing to leave. An appeal must be submitted to the officer within forty-eight hours of receiving the order.
the competent official shall have authority to order said alien by written notification to leave the Kingdom.

Land crossings near Chiang Mai (Thai side)
Chiang Rai Immigration covers 2 permanent border crossing points, 1 airport and 5 relaxed crossing points.
Mae Sai
The Mae Sai River Bridge No. 1 permanent crossing is in Mae Sai municipality, opposite the Tachileik checkpoint in Shan State, Myanmar. It opens 06.30-18.30 every day, and a passport or a border pass is used to enter and leave. The Bridge 2 crossing admits only lorries and goods-transport vehicles.

Chiang Khong and Chiang Saen
The Chiang Saen Immigration Checkpoint has an office for Chiang Khong (เชียงของ) at 345 Moo 10, Wiang Sub-district, Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai 57140, telephone 053 791 692-4. Its second office is at 119 Moo 3, Wiang Sub-district, Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai 57150, telephone 053 777 118.
Chiang Khong and the Lao side
A Lao eVisa can be used at the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge IV in Bokeo Province. The application has three steps: details and documents, online payment, then the approval letter. The Lao fee is non-refundable and is calculated on the portal.

The return to Thailand is a new entry, so it needs a new TDAC.
The Mae Sai bridge is different: whether Myanmar admits foreign tourists at Tachileik is not confirmed (see the box at the top).
The alternatives to a run
Extend your stay
A visa-exempt visitor may request an extension of up to 30 days. It is granted once, counted from the day the permission ends. An entry plus an extension gives two periods of not more than thirty days each.
Order 12/2568 clause 2.4 sets a single grant of not more than 30 days from the day the permission ends. Apply before the permitted stay ends; approval is at the officer’s discretion.
- File at the immigration office for the area where you live.
- Use form TM.7 with a photo attached.
- The fee is THB 1,900.
- The 2019 immigration handbook gives a processing time of 40 minutes once the documents are complete.
- A second counter at Central Festival Chiang Mai, 2nd floor, handles tourist extensions. It is open 09:00 to 17:00.

The extension guide covers documents and queues. Chiang Mai Immigration also offers an online extension, for certain visa types only; the application site is thaiextension.vfsevisa.com. Whether a visa-exempt entrant qualifies is not confirmed, so confirm with the office first.

A longer visa
The Destination Thailand Visa is valid for 5 years. A holder may stay a maximum of 180 days per entry, and the visa is multiple entry. Applicants must show financial evidence of at least THB 500,000. See the DTV guide.
Leaving after an extension
Under Section 39, leaving the Kingdom is treated as the end of a temporary stay permission. Read the re-entry permit guide before you cross with an extension in your passport. A stay past the stamp date is an overstay at THB 500 per day, up to THB 20,000; see overstay fines.
Before you cross: a short plan

- Complete the TDAC online within 3 days before arrival.
