Chiang Mai advice & opinions Hello everyone. I have been in Thailand for nearly a year and a half on an DTV visa and I am considering moving to Chiang Mai. I have been living in Hua Hin and Jomtien and really need a change of pace. I am looking to get local advice and opinions. So please answer whatever questions you can. 1. I am considering living in either the Wat Ket or Santitham areas. For those in this area, do you have any complaints? 2. I am considering renting a house. I have grown really tired of loud neighbors and everything relating to elevators. Are there any downsides to renting a house that aren't obvious? 3. For those planning to leave Chiang Mai for elsewhere in Thailand, where do you plan to go and why do you want to leave? 4. I am 30M and am hoping to meet someone eventually. How is the dating scene? 5. I actually haven't interacted with any expats my age since I've been in Thailand. How long do expats in my age group tend to stick around Chiang Mai? 6. Ultimately my goals are to escape the heat, find a place where I can do outdoor things, pick up hobbies like ceramics, and be around people that may share similar interests. Aside from the burning season, Chiang Mai should meet some of these goals right? I appreciate any advice and opinions. I plan to move to Chiang Mai at the end of March, but I may delay to avoid the worst of the burning season.

Right now it’s starting to heat up, you can’t get away from that this time of year, but later in the year can be very pleasant with the need to layer up. With renting a house it really depends on your budget. The more affordable houses are much further out so you’d have to drive into the city for any social activities. The kitchens are likely set up for gas so if you cook at home consider the extra cost of canisters and the logistics of delivery. You could also look at low rise condo buildings if you want a quieter place, but you can’t control neighbours. The dating scene in general is easier for men in Thailand so you should be fine. There is a much younger crowd here for you, both in dating and socially. I lived in Hua Hin for two years and so much happier here in Chiang Mai. There are a lot of expats based here as well as those who pass through for several months. In terms of social, you could do something every day of the week here. There are so many meet ups, workshops, events. I’ve gotten into the Latin dance scene since moving here. I’ve not looked into ceramics but I’ve seen pottery classes here. There is a huge variety of things to do. Chiang Mai is great for nature, hiking, kayaking etc. There is a good wellness scene here as well (sauna, ice bath, breath-work, yoga etc). The great thing is having all the convenience of a city without compromising on nature, and without having any where near as bad traffic as Bangkok (lived for one year). The thing to look out for when you choose a place is the noise of the planes. If you want peace, avoid the flight line. I’m under it but they don’t really bother me. For others it might be a deal breaker. And then there is the burning season which you seem aware of already. I’ve noticed the dance socials are getting quieter and a lot of people leave during the burning season. So if you have any health conditions maybe leaving for that period would also be worth it for you.

Healthy food Hello everyone! I’m looking for a place to eat healthy food — rice/eggs, chicken, vegetables. No unnecessary sauces, no sugar. Ideally, I’m looking for a small local eatery, nothing fancy or trendy or expensive. Do you know where I could find that? Ideally in the Santitham area, where I’ll be staying.

there're small clean food stall in front of GoGym. I believe there's really barely sauce or sugar because it was a little too bland for me. (I have thai tongue)

Khao man gai (plain, skinless chicken over white rice) is available all over town. It's served with a side of chili sauce and a cup of chicken broth. A super basic dish that's still one of my favorites. You'll find it by looking for cooked chickens hanging in storefronts.

It's almost impossible to get them to agree to anything while you are not in Thailand, I had the same issue. I honestly would recommend taking the first month on Airbnb, and then feet on the ground. There are so many available units, but it's just first come, first serve. I can give you an example: I moved 2 weeks ago and had 3 viewings for different condos. The first one I really liked, but I wanted to see the other 2 just in case. When I was done, the apartment was gone, even though the owner said it was not an issue to wait 2 hours, as I had just told her I needed to go to the bank to withdraw funds for the deposit. Don't panic — you *can* find a nice 2-bedroom condo here without any issues. No need to compromise :) I had a friend there who had a 1-bedroom at Dvieng. Excellent condos, but his room was for sure small, though there might be other units there that are bigger. I can't give you much advice about daycare, though, but I thought I wanted to share this.
