Just survived severe Dengue
My husband and I are on our honey moon right now in Thailand. I got bit in Bangkok and when I was in Chiang Mai started getting hit with the symptoms.
I thought it was the flu because it started with chills, body aches, head pain, and a fever. But the fever kept coming back after 4 days so I got nervous. We went to the doctor in Pai and I was positive for dengue with a blood palette count of 84,000. I have never been this sick in my entire life. I had no appetite, no energy, and my head felt like I was repetitively getting stabbed. Rashes started to fill my body and I couldn’t recognize myself in the mirror. After two days of no improvement I went to the doctor in Chang Mai and my blood count was 60,000. They told me to come back the next day. I was vomiting all that night.
The next day I was hospitalized. I got diagnosed with dengue induced severe hepatitis. I have sever liver damage. Thankfully after 8 long terrible days I am on the road to recovery but I want to warn you guys in Thailand right now to WEAR REPELLENT WITH DEET!! We wore the pink 7-11 repellent religiously and it did nothing.
Be careful and protect yourself because it is very real and super scary.

Thank you for writing this; reading your story (and the comments underneath) has prompted me to check what my repellent was and it turned out to be one of the natural pink ones that apparently don't do much
I went to a pharmacy and bough some good 50% DEET stuff right away
Anyway I hope you'll get better soon!

Is dengue fever an issue in Chiang Mai
I contracted dengue fever on a trip to Bangkok and southern Thailand last October. I love the country and want to return in February. This time to Chiang Mai to ride the mai hong son loop Ina motorcycle
I am terrified that I might contract dengue again. I believe it can be much worse second time round and sometimes even fatal. I will take all precautions with clothing and repellents etc.
I am also investigating getting a dengue vaccine but it is not generally available here in Australia.
Is it an issue in the north.
Any advice appreciated

Dengue fever is a concern in Chiang Mai, especially during the rainy season.

Yes. It's a problem. Wear DEET-based mosquito repellent, especially at dawn or dusk, or when near bodies of standing water.
I've had it before, and it's not something to fuck with.

There is now a very effective dengue vaccine…QDengue. It was developed in Thailand and is manufactured by Takeda….a Japanese pharmaceutical company. It takes 2 shots….spaced 3 months apart.
After I got my first shot….the doctor told me that I would be highly protected. If I were to get dengue before I got my second shot, I would only feel like I had a mild flu for a couple of days. After receiving the second shot…. I would be more than 90% protected.

Dengvaxia, yes.
> Dengvaxia is only recommended in those who have previously had dengue fever or populations in which most people have been previously infected due to a phenomenon known as antibody-dependent enhancement.[13] The value of Dengvaxia is limited by the fact that it may increase the risk of severe dengue in those who have not previously been infected.
Qdenga, no.
> Qdenga is designated for people not previously infected.

We are lucky to have so many relatively cheap places to get it in Chiang Mai. We got it at Chiang Mai Ram hospital.
