Can a couple live a 'decent' life in Chiang Mai for around 50-55k Baht per month? I can work remotely and currently getting a DTV visa. After deducting a necessary small amount (for emergencies/extra travels, etc.) and probably health insurance, I can estimate to be left with around 50-55k Thai Baht to spend every month with my remote work depending on the month. I'd prefer living in a house vs a condo - I've seen condos are small and bigger ones too expensive. Whereas a bigger house maybe far from the main areas can be cheaper. I don't mind this and paying up to 20k per month for it (hoping it's enough for a decent place) Question then comes, is remaining amount of money, around 30k, enough for sort of a comfortable life for everything else and to eat and do regular things, go to a bar/restaurant once a week, maybe do some activity once in a while to not be stuck at home at all times? (For two, me + wife) Also, I've been to Thailand before twice and I'm very okay with and actually enjoy most of the food. I don't need/want to live a 'western' life in that sense. Might also have pets (cats) which don't really cost a lot unless they get sick - I'm aware many housing don't allow pets.

Easily doable if you are not living the high life. I rent a decent 2 bed house just outside the old city for 9k baht a month (German guy and his gf live next door in another 2 bed and only pay 7k), all utilities (water, electric, internet and cell phone) cost another 1k a month. Eat out twice a day (mostly local restaurants) and go to a cafe everyday and with other stuff I eat at home its another 10k a month. After that just have a gym membership, go to free yoga classes in the park as well as other activities like movie nights, game nights, language meet-ups, Thai massage in the temples etc. all of which cost very little. I spend less than 30k baht a month and you would be splitting rent etc. I don't drink alcohol so bars/clubs etc. are not a factor for me.

20k is possible? Wow. Literally live in Southern Hang Dong and only maybe 5% of homes here are over 20k. It’s easy to find sub 10k homes.

Definitely doable - I'd put my bottom limit at around 20-25K p/m for a single person (motorbike, condo etc) - around 40K or so for a couple - I had a nice 3 bed house (24K), and I'd typically spend around 5K per week on groceries, fun, fuel (car) - I was running around 65K per month but including my son and his education was 20K. per month. We'd also go on adventures to rainforests, waterfalls etc almost every weekend, sometimes staying overnight (ie: trip to chiang dao 1.5 hrs away + 600 baht a night accommodation). Chiang mai is a funny place. You can rent a house for 5K baht or 250K baht and everywhere in between. You can eat for 50 baht a meal or 1200 baht a meal and everywhere in between. A typical westernish style 2 bed house would start around 10K per month but cheaper if you go ~20 minutes away like Mae Jo or something.

Cost of Living Breakdown I'm planning to live in Chiang Mai for maybe a year or less. My monthly budget is $800 I cannot go above this. Although I have a fair idea of condos I am cluless about the utility bills and other costs. Can someone give me a basic breakdown of their monthly expenses? Also I'm a Muslim so I'm worried that cheap local food stalls might not have halal food. It was widely available in restaurants when I was in Phuket because there's a sizeable Muslim population there but local stalls were still very much non-halal. Also, is there any website that can help me find a place where I can maybe share a house or condo with someone?

I actually disagree that it’s way too low. If you are a young guy and you are disciplined about it, it’s possible without misery. With monthly rent at $400 and $400 for everything else, you focus on cheap food and you’re a fine. The OP doesn’t drink so that gets rid of some expense. If you can bump it up to $1200 that would be better but if you have $800 as a hard budget, you can make it happen. You can even get lower accommodation than $400 a month if you are not fussy.

Doesn’t look like you have factored in any immigration costs. As others have said it is technically doable, but it’s going to be very very tight. I was living on that budget about 10 years ago and it felt tight even then.

Chiang mai is the cheapest place I've lived. You can easily do a basic lifestyle with that budget. $800 USD = ~28k THB Monthly costs; Rent 1br apartment: 8k (plenty of options for 4-6k but giving you some buffer) Utilities: 1.5k (mine is 600-700 as I don't use the ac but again giving you some buffer) Motorbike: 2.5k Fuel: 300 SIM card: 200 Coffee: 2.4k (40b each, 2 per day) Food: 7.5k (60b each, 3 per day, 20b fruit daily & 50b extra daily allowance for other snacks or maybe you get a slightly more expensive meal) Other expenses I haven't included but you may need to factor in are gym, entertainment, visa/immigration fees, etc. Total: 22.4k (Plenty of buffer, put it towards whatever you want.) There's a few muslim restaurants in my area and there's also FoodPanda/Grab so you'd be fine. The best way to find accomodation in Thailand is to choose an area and walk into every place you see asking what their monthly rate is and to see the room. I looked at about 8 different places then decided on one. Very easy. You can also search on google maps for "Residences" if you want to read reviews and make a shortlist of places. Enjoy the Khao soi!

Great calculation, I'd probably add up on fuel (my full tank is 200thb and it lasts a week) and reduce on coffee (just get a filter and DIY)

$800/month is doable. I tracked my COL expenses religiously and I’ve lived here for 10 months now. I average $950/month including the 60k THB visa (+extensions) paid in advance. I walk, use a bicycle, or hire InDrive/Bolt/Grab to move around. I don’t drink alcohol. Here's a monthly breakdown based on the 10-month average I’ve spent so far: * Rent: 10,000 around Santitham (studio) * Electricity & Water: 600 - 2,000, depending on season - you need a fan in the minimum * Phone & internet: 200b on AIS 100gb MaoMao plan * Food: 7,000-9,000 * Transport: used bicycle 2.5k, ride sharing 1,800 * Toiletries & household items: 1,500 * Travel insurance, dentist, OTC meds: 3,000 * Activities: 1,300 * Shopping & miscellaneous: 1,200 I also traveled outside of the country twice and my $950/mo avg considers that. You can definitely find a cheaper apartment with older buildings or fewer facilities. The Chang Klan area has quite a number of halal street food options. If you're coming from a western lifestyle that budget might be uncomfortable for you. If you can adapt to the local food and culture, it's easy.
