What’s your average electricity bill? Hey guys I’m new to Chiang Mai here and we just moved in about 2-3 months or so. We’re living in a small house in a gate community (3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms) and our electricity bill for the first month was around 6.8k baht. It’s true that we blasted AC almost all day but I had no idea electricity would be this expensive; maybe it is compared to Bangkok. The most recent bill cost around 3.8k baht (last month). I’m just confused as to why it costs this much. What do you think? Is this a normal cost for electricity over here? P.S - our landlord installed this really big water tank/generator that uses electricity to put water into the tank. We normally don’t get water if the electricity is out too so maybe that’s the reason why? Or maybe I’m just tripping. Please indulge me if I’m just being ignorant. Thanks.

Have all of the aircons cleaned, it should reduce that a bit. Also, bumping up just 1 or 2 degrees on the temp can make a difference.

What temperature you have set the AC? The time of having the inside AC unit turned on is not very relevant, it has just a small motor/fan that doesn't use much power. The temperature setting is used to determine how many cycles the outside unit (compressor) has to run per hour and that's what is actually consuming the power. I have 3 ACs all set to 26'C and I have at least one AC turned on 24/7. Total bill is around 2000 THB in a condo in Bangkok. If it's 30+ outside you don't want to set inside temperature too low as the compressor would just run constantly and the inside temperature would never reach your setting due to lack of isolation in the house/room.

Are you being billed by the PEA directly and by the landlord? If the PEA, you're paying the government rate.

Blasting aircon all day could hit above 4K baht(if more than 2 rooms). And for going off-grid, it's better to check with contract. Not sure how things are in Chiang Mai, I rarely see people(house on lease) going offgrid in Bangkok, even in suburb area.

How much is considered a regular electricity bill? I’ll be living in Chiang Mai for a month with my girlfriend and the room rate look good however the electricity rate is 7 baht per unit. Is that normal and what would be the expected cost for the electricity bill? Assuming this is just a regular hotel room type. Chiang Mai is pretty cold so I don’t think we would be using the AC that much but that’s me guessing.

> Assuming this is just a regular hotel room type. Not sure what you mean by that - do you mean a serviced apartment? It's common for rates to be higher than the PEA rate depending on the type and ownership of where you are staying. Seven baht is ok, though. The PEA rate (billed directly) I think is up to around 5.4 now. > Chiang Mai is pretty cold so I don’t think we would be using the AC that much but that’s me guessing. Won't get warm at night again until mid-late February. Some 14c's forecast for later this week. It hasn't been that cold this year in Chiang Mai compared to previous years - you certainly won't need AC, though :)

> Like any regular hotel rooms you’d find online. Sounds like a studio apartment - 7 baht is ok. If you're planning on staying long term, if your room doesn't have a fan, buy one, even second hand. If you're worried about your power costs, when it gets hot, use a fan instead of the AC. There are times in March and April where you will need to use the AC, but at most other times a fan suffices.

Average shower around the 10kW mark so running it for an hour will cost around 70 baht? So a dollar gonna get you 2 15 minute showers? Is my math right. AC is the thing to watch, keep it a reasonable 20 something...

I think those that said 1000 baht sounds right for that type of room (single dorm style room with bathroom and without kitchen). I leave the air con on all the time I am in my room. I have lived in a one bedroom condo and my electric was 3000-4000 per month. I have also lived in three three bedroom houses and the electric bill ranged from 2500-7500. Some houses are just not that efficient. All of these were PEA rates, none had additional charges added like you see in the dorm style places.
