(Wat Chedi Luang) 8:00–17:00 103 Phra Pokklao Road
(Wat Phra Singh) — 2 Samlarn Road
(Warorot Market) 6:00–18:00 Wichayanon Road
(Night Bazaar) 17:00–0:00 Changklan Road
69 Wua Lai Road
17:00–22:30 Rachadamnoen Road

Chiang Mai or No? My partner and I are visiting Thailand and we are working on our itinerary. Our current plan is: 4 days Bangkok 4-5 days island hopping 3-4 days Phuket We are debating if we should also visit Chiang Mai for 2 days, the dilemma being that it is the opposite direction of the other locations and would cut in to island/Phuket time. Is Chiang Mai worth cutting in to our other plans? If so, what are some favorite things to do in and around the area? We are both very active and enjoy hiking, food, mountains, and experiencing the culture of a place. Doi Inthanon was the main recommendation we had received previously, but it looks like a lot of driving and less hiking/being in nature/ looking at pretty things. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hey there! I just got back from a vacation to Thailand. 3 full days in Bangkok is more than enough. For one of these 3 we also did a day trip to Ayutthaya. Definitely skip Phuket. From Bangkok, fly (get an early morning flight) or take the night train to Chiang Mai and spend a couple of days there instead. Then fly to the south. In Chiang Mai, we did a nice full day Elephant Sanctuary that included a hike and bamboo rafting. We also ate at a very local place which was nice. Joined a half day cooking class which was really nice to do. Other than that we just chilled, explored, got a Thai massage, went to the night markets, etc. It was amazing there. If you want more tips you can always send me a dm, happy to help you out!

I just finished up in Thailand for my second time and Chiang Mai was both mine and my partners favourite place, I wouldn’t skip it. The night train up from Bangkok was super easy and you don’t lose any time doing it that way, but I’d book ahead on 12Go Asia and go for 2nd class sleeper class. Maybe bring an eye mask and ear plugs. We did the typical elephant sanctuary thing but we did a small group (8 people) and it seemed like the elephants loved it, absolute highlight for us. The jazz co op was worth a see but get there the minute it opens for good seats. Famous cowboy hat lady did amazing food and is worth the hype (search cowboy hat on Google maps and it’ll pop up by the north gate. I’d take a day off Bangkok without a minutes thought, you will be a bit sick of it after 3 I think and the pollution is horrendous, we were coughing constantly. Phuket was okay but nothing crazy, I’d be tempted to take a day off there to spend some more time on koh tao or Krabi/Railay! Khao Sak National park is good for hiking etc but obviously you’ll have to prioritise 3 or 4 places.

I’ve spend a month in CM and now 2+ months in Bangkok. As for the city itself I vastly prefer Bangkok, much easier to find authentic non touristy spots and just have so much more to do and better food scene. CM has some great spots outside the city, but you depend on renting a car or hire a driver. Chang Dao was great, Doi Inthanon disappointing , Mon Jam great. If i was you I would do both. Bangkok and CM if I was able to do at least 4 days each. For Bangkok just avoid lower sukhumvit and Khaosan road and you’ll love it. Chinatown, Marble Temple, Rod Fai, Talat Phlu night market and a trip up to the rotating deck of Baiyoke II tower should not be missed. I suspect allot of people that don’t like Bangkok have only visited lower Sukhumvit and maybe Khaosan Road, which is indeed trash. The seedy spots like Nana Plaza etc isn’t worth visiting at all. Btw, currently on Koh Kood, and it’s so far my absolute favorite place in Thailand.

Between ten to fourteen hours bring an eye mask and ear plugs It's a nice experience but try and book it in advance or you'll be on the top bunks and the lights do not turn off

I just left the north and the pollution almost killed me. Bear it’s the worst time of the year to visit chiang mai, check air quality index. Also, I know it’s unpopular opinion, but chiang mai town is not Thailand, all these expats converted into a western town, and only temples remind you are in Thailand. Too much western, too little Thai. I mean it’s not bad I guess, beautiful, but just not Thailand. Phuket don’t even bother. Better stay in Phangnga or Krabi. Do Bangkok, it’s amazing, also for islands perhaps do Koh Chang, Koh Mak and Koh Kood. More cheap, more authentic and quieter Khao Sok National park is awesome Also many awesome islands around Koh Lanta, but not koh lanta itself 🙂

    6. thecoop21

Make sure you try Khao Soi! Its a northern thai noodle curry that will blow your mind! Also suggest getting a day trip over to chiang rai to see the white temple and feed and bathe some elephants.

    7. savagesiege89

Yuck. Fly. It's so cheap. Don't waste time on trains or buses on such a short trip to Thailand when round trip flights from phuket or BKK to CM are only $50-60 and save you 10 hours.

    8. Cheap-Design4985

Bangkok to Chiang Mai in a hot seat (extra legroom) with 20 kg of baggage is 51 USD. I just booked it. Unless the night train is a thing you would enjoy skip it.
