Lifestyle for the non-budgeter Hello, I’m looking into potentially retiring in Thailand and Chiang Mai is at the top of my list for cities. I can find endless amounts of stories and information on how cheap it is, but if I’m moving there for retirement I want to know how I can actually upgrade my life for more out there. Monthly, I’ll be bringing in a little over 6k USD. Which I know it’s more than enough to live there but how well can I actually live is what I’m looking for. I don’t go out to party maybe once or twice a month, my plan in retirement is to train muay thai, workout and eat as well as I can.

For me driver and a big house is not needed, although housekeeping would be a nice upgrade to my current life. I’ve been checking listings around the nimman area that seem nice and affordable for around $600 usd a month

I'm in a similar situation to you based on your comments. Thailand will tax you on remitted income into the Kingdom; they do not delineate on the source of income-- VA, pension, etc. But the amount is dependent on your visa. Some visa categories allow tax exclusions.

2k usd for 2-3 months, rent, muay thai, coworking included Hello everyone, I'll be in chiang mai soon (around april), and this time I'm on a budget. I have 2k usd, and I want to stay 2 to 3 months. I may or may not earn money during that time- I work online as a contractor, you never know when the money might come. I'll just plan it as if I'll make 0 bucks during my stay. I have stayed in Bangkok before, so I have some experience in Thailand. I'll be coming there to mainly focus on muay thai and my online work. Since I'm on a such tight budget, I've been checking hostels and coworking spaces. So far my idea is to stay at a hostel for 3500 baht per month, pay a 24/7 coworking space (found one called yellow incubator, they seem nice) which costs around 6k baht. Most muay thai gyms I found online there are around 10k a month. Which is surprising to me, because I was training in Bangkok for 4k baht a month. So, rent + coworking + muay thai makes around 20k per month. Which is around 600 usd. I think I'd spend around 10k baht (300 usd) for living, like food and stuff. Now, what do you think of my budgeting? Am I onto the point, missing something? Is it lower or higher than what I'd need? Plus to that, I'd really be happy if you could give me suggestions that I hadn't think of: Can I find a room for cheap? How so? Shall I look for shared housing, do you know where can I find my way? Any local muay thai gyms that are cheaper than 10k a month? Any other 24/7 coworking space you could recommend? Any help & tip is appreciated.

In my opinion it’s not enough… id aim for 1K USD per month. That’s about what I spend, not living luxuriously and not doing Muay Thai either. It may be possible but you’ll be setting yourself up for struggle

Thank you for your reply. The last time I was in Thailand I rented a house for 550 usd per month (long term contract), and only used it for sleep. I was outside the whole day, was using cafés for work because it gets lonely working at the house all by yourself. That's why I was thinking this time I should go with a 7/24 open coworking space, so at least I'd interact with some people every now and then, and can grind hard. If your place is not fun to be, stay and work, idk. Thanks for the muay thai gym suggestion also. It's wild that these gyms in chiang mai have this class per day system. In BKK they did not have that. I was paying around 5k, totally unlimited.

You can rent an apartment in Northern Thailand for Bt3,000 a month. Why stay at a stinkin hostel. Dig deeper, dude.

    4. ninjanoodlin

If you’re really trying to budget, there’s a few gyms outside the city. Train there and just live at the gym like most fighters.

Are u interested in muai thai only or u just need a gym? Get condo contract for 3month, it will be like 500$ per month(much cheaper for 1y contract but u said 2-3m), but u will have a free gym, pool and work zone (your own appartments or public zones in condo). Other 500$ is for food. Not great, as western i had some 2-2,5k$ per month expenses, but it was without any limits for food or spa. Still possible to have a good quality of life for 1k$ month.

I am in Chiang Mai RIGHT NOW. I am a traveler so I am staying in hostels but there is an American guy at the gym I am going to(O2 Gym) who lives here. His basic studio in this area of the city is 170USD a month(that he says is great). Plus electricity. It's a 4 year old building. He found it through word of mouth. FB groups have their place but actually being here and talking to people is the way to go. I'll see him at the gym and see if he has the contact info in case you want it. The hostel I am in right now is really quite good. Individual single beds with dividers, It is so clean and quiet. A good working space that is available 24 hours. Free water and coffee and a BASIC breakfast for $5 USD per night. So many cheap local food options it almost does not make sense to buy groceries. Th hostel name is Nonoteru. It's almost more than a hostel. I cannot speak about Muy Thai or any of that.
