Best place to experience Yi Peng / Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai? Hey guys, I’ll be in Chiang Mai for the Yi Peng / Loy Krathong festival and wondering where it’s best to go these days. Are locals still gathering by the Ping River or temples, or is everything moved to ticketed events like the CAD Cultural Center? Also what time should I show up to actually see the lanterns going up, and any tips on what to bring or how to avoid the worst crowds? Looking for something beautiful but not super touristy. Thanks!

So, just to clarify, there are 2 separate festivals going on at the same time in Chiang Mai- deep histories of both in Lanna Culture. 1 loy krathong festivities are happening all around the city and temples. This is the banana boat that goes into the river festival, as well as little candles all around the temple - i think wat chedi luang if I saw the live stream correctly. Usually theres a bunch of stuff at 3 kings monument including a parade. People still bring their boats to the ping river. 2. yi peng - the flying sky lanterns - there appears 2 be 2 free events far out. Lamphun and Doi Saket (but not the original location from previous years). Lighting flying sky lanterns is against the law within city limits, even if someone sells a lantern to you. Yi peng however is not always about lighting flying sky lanterns - many temples may also celebrate by hanging beautiful lanterns - lamphun has a very nice version of this and there typically is a smaller hanging exhibition near 3 kings.

I went to nakhon phanom during songkran and same shit there (and i stayed in a tiny ass countryside village). So it's the exact same thing literally everywhere (i even went to laos, where you also got drenched). So if you want to avoid getting splashed, make sure you don't book your trip on songkran. Also, the splashing begins at 6am and does out after 12am, so it's basically a whole day event (hell, it dipped to 22C and we still got splashed while borderline hypothermic)

Visting Chiang Mai during Songkran We will stay in Chiang Mai from 14th to 19th. Please give us tips to have the best time here. Im aware that we can be splashed with water on the 14th and 15th but will the water sprinkling continue after that? When will the restaurant open after Songkran (we would love to try out the 3 Bath noodles and Cherng Doi Roast Chicken). I would love to receive more recommendation on the food and the places to visit.

You won't get splashed with water, you will get SOAKED. If you go anywhere near the moat, it will be moat water as well, almost certainly with ice. It's great fun but I'd I'd suggest avoiding the area directly on the moat; you will get wet wherever you go in public lol.

The water fights in Bangkok make the Thai national news. Chiangmai’s usually don’t. If you are renting a motorcycle, be prepared to have water thrown at you from out of a bucket. Half the Thai population takes that week off to go home and drink. Try staying off the roads for that reason.

Raincoats are 100% acceptable and 70% effective. Generally speaking you are safe early morning (before 9-10am), and after the sun goes down. Cease fire hours are well respected. Don't take electronics out unprotected even at these times though. If you don't want to be splashed you can gesture with your hand and shake you head and say no water krup. 90% of Thais will not splash you unless you're in a splash zone if you do this. They may instead throw a small handful of water on your shoulder (the old, polite way of doing it).

The biggest water fight and party day is on the 13th but it will still be going on 14th and 15, by 16th it should be over except for maybe a few idiotic tourists. Some restaurants remain open throughout the holiday but some close. If you want to get around just get a grab or bolt car (not bike or songthaew) and you will be fine and arrive dry. Cherng Doi is pretty good, but nothing special IMO and these days very touristy, I just saw a long line waiting outside yesterday. For me this place has the best grilled chicken in Nimman, and while it's still popular it's not as touristy and hyped as Cherng Doi. https://maps.app.goo.gl/1LR2TMqJvFwrKm6K9 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/1lr2tmqjvfwrkm6k9) For the best grilled chicken in the old city it's SP chicken: https://maps.app.goo.gl/7yFzFjJN8eouY6hy7 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/7yfzfjjn8eouy6hy7) For the best grilled pork in Chiang Mai and also fantastic chicken Neng Earthen Jar Roast Pork is great. https://maps.app.goo.gl/2E3jkdNwg2LXhHGk7 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/2e3jkdnwg2lxhhgk7) If you want to try Khao Soy, MaeSai is still be best IMO. Get's busy with both locals and tourists too though. https://maps.app.goo.gl/KTWNAQK75DVtFQq16 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ktwnaqk75dvtfqq16) If you like seafood, Maadae Slow Fish is probably my favorite restaurant overall in Chiang Mai. Been here countless times and never had a bad dish. https://maps.app.goo.gl/MLbbXrRzEbXSfVpr9 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/mlbbxrrzebxsfvpr9) This little local place next to the river is also fantastic: https://maps.app.goo.gl/XysvgWCfkhrok1s49 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/xysvgwcfkhrok1s49)
