The Chiang Mai Immigration homepage carries a Thailand E-Extension block that calls the service easier, faster and more convenient. It is valid for select visa categories, and the Thai wording says only certain visa types. The office’s own notice is aimed at tourists, so a tourist extension is the safest case.

Who e-Extension is for

The service is applying for an extension of stay through the online system. Its January 2024 notice is headed E-Extension for tourism, issued by Chiangmai Immigration, Division 5.

The Immigration Bureau released the system on 8 November 2022, with Bangkok as the pilot area. The pilot served 12 reasons for extending a stay, starting with tourism. Retirement is not one of the 12 names. In the first phase the sticker came from Immigration Division 1.

The goal was to cover all immigration offices nationwide.

Chiang Mai had joined by January 2024. Chiang Mai accepts select visa categories only, and the 2026 list is unpublished. If the portal rejects your category, the counter route stays open.

A visa-exempt visitor can request an extension of up to 30 days. It must be filed before the permitted stay ends. Nationals of Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria and Uganda get no more than 7 days. Visitors admitted before 15 September 2026 under the previous measures may stay until the granted period ends.

The four steps

The notice sets out four steps.

  1. Go to the on-boarding page, or scan the QR code, and give your email, phone number and nationality.
  2. Specify the application details and upload the required documents.
  3. Book a queue and make the online payment.
  4. Wait for approval and receive the E-Extension visa stamp at the immigration checkpoint.

Applicants pay fees online, book queues and receive stamps faster at the checkpoint. The portal is thaiextension.vfsevisa.com.

Online or at the counter

The in-person route uses form TM.7 with a photo. The papers are the passport with one copy, the TM.7 and the signed Acknowledgement of Penalties for a Visa Overstay. The handbook gives 40 minutes once the documents are complete. The clock starts after an officer has checked that the papers are complete.

The online route moves the form and payment to the portal. It still ends with a visit to the checkpoint for the stamp. If the portal refuses your application, take the same papers to the counter. The extension steps and papers are in how to extend a tourist stay in Chiang Mai.

Second counter in the mall

A second service point is on the 2nd floor of Central Festival Chiangmai. It is open 09:00 to 17:00 and lists extensions of short-term tourist visas.

The phone is 065-765-7029. The notice names only “the immigration checkpoint” for the stamp. Since this counter lists tourist extensions, call it before you go and ask whether it issues e-Extension stamps.
