For a birth outside a house, such as in a hospital, a parent notifies the registrar within 15 days of birth. If that is impossible, the notice may be given later but not more than thirty days after birth. A notice after the legal deadline of 15 days carries a fine of up to one thousand baht.

The notification goes to the registrar of the locality where the child was born. A hospital birth certificate, if available, is among the documents. Rajavej’s package includes a birth registration service.

The full steps are in the guide to birth registration in Chiang Mai.

The baby’s permission to stay

The order sets no separate rule for a newborn that was found, so the family extension is the route to ask about. Clause 2.20 of Order 12/2568 covers the family of a foreigner permitted to stay temporarily, including a worker (2.1) and a retiree (2.22). Permission is for up to 1 year at a time.

  • A child must be unmarried, live in the household and be no more than 20 full years old, unless ill or disabled and unable to live alone.
  • A copy of the birth certificate is accepted as proof of the relationship.

Clause 2.19, for the family of a person who has a residence in the Kingdom, has the same age test. Residence is not defined there.

While an extension is considered, the applicant may stay with appointment stamps, in total no more than 30 days from the day the permission ended. If the criteria are not met, the officer refuses and the foreigner must leave within 7 days of that day.

A Thai embassy grants the Non-Immigrant (O) visa for dependants to a family entering from abroad, of a main applicant on a Non-Immigrant B, ED or O-A visa. The applicant must show proof of relationship, such as a birth certificate.

The visa is single-entry and must be used within 90 days of issue. On arrival the holder gets an initial permit to stay of up to 90 days, and the Immigration Bureau can extend the stay to 1 year. The dependent visa guide has the clauses and the document list.

Bring your passport to the hospital: showing it is mandatory at both public and private hospitals to get treatment.
