Tipping a Barber for a Haircut How much do yall tip a barber for a haircut in Chiang Mai?
Importchef
I paid 500 for cut and shave. I tip 100. Which is too much. 60-80 is normal. Or not at all since tipping is not customary. Been going to this guy for years. He is flexible to my schedule sometimes which i like

Tipping suggestions .... taxis, restaurants, cafes etc. Hi, just moved here after 15 years in the US so fully indoctrinated into tipping every single person for everything. What's normal here, what's expected, what's not? I remember in Japan years ago it was considered rude to tip. I got a haircut today and the hairdresser stood near the recpetion where I was paying after and I wasn't sure if she was expecting a tip or not. Taxis, cafes and restaurants are my daily uses. Thanks.

It is completely optional. That said, in reality. Mom&pop restaurants, street food stalls, generally when you're served by the owner: don't tip. You may leave coin change. If you go to a more fancy restaurant or a bar where you're served by server staff, they will be happy about a 20, 40, 60 baht tip but you're not expected to tip something substantial (like 10-20% of the bill as in the US, no, don't). Same goes for Grab drivers and Taxi drivers.

I usually tip 10b grab driver as it's a shitty dangerous job (and even 20b when it's rainy). I usually round up BKK taxi to the next 20b especially if they didn't try any trick. I would also let the 1 or 2b coin from mom&dad shop as I don't enjoy collection kg of coins. I'm not coming from a country with a tipping habits so I might tip 20 (hair stylist etc) if I'm very happy. Oh and when I stay in a hotel, I usually let coins or 20-40b for the cleaning lady on the last day (if I was happy) Finally I usually give 50-100b during Chinese new year to regular security guards/juristic ppl... not a lot (let's say 500b in total for a year but it's can go a long way).

There's no expectations to tip but keep in mind many people servicing you can earn between 300-500 baht a day. A small tip can help their life if you feel you've genuinely received great service. Tipping is simply as it should be, a "display of gratitude for the service provided" unlike the US.

How much to tip? Looking to book full 9-hour custom tour in both Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Each are well under $100 USD per day. What % or amount is customary? EDIT: Most everyone who has commented in here has been unhelpful but there have been a few at this point who were. Thank you to those. My question was nothing but respectful as I asked the tipping culture in Thailand coming from the US to understand what would be best as I enter a new country. I really hope those that commented were trolls and not locals. I WILL be tipping! I’m not riding a $6k each luxury flight across the ocean and then pay a person $50 for there entire day without a nice tip. It just doesn’t sit well with me. And if they don’t appreciate it I’d be amazed. Thanks for those that had any quality input. - Title says most of it. I’m taking my 70 yr old dad for his first trip to Asia (Thailand) and figured a private day tour in 2 of our stops would be great to get started. What is appropriate and customary for tipping on this sort of stuff in Thailand? On a side note, how about tipping in general like food, etc.? I’m decently well travelled but mostly to Europe so this is newer territory I’m leaning into and want to be respectful. Thanks!

It's not required, but if your guide is really good, works hard to help you enjoy your trip I'm sure they would really appreciate a few hundred baht. The guide is probably earning around 20-30k baht per month. You will spend that much in a day or two on your vacation. So a small amount from you can make a big difference to them. It's not about being American or tipping culture. It's just about being decent and rewarding someone for making your vacation better.
