U.S. Citizen applying for retirement visa. Is this true? I was told: to obtain the initial Non-Immigrant O or O-A visa for retirement, US citizens generally need to apply first at a Thai embassy or consulate in the US, such as the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington DC or consulates in Los Angeles or New York. This visa typically allows entry to Thailand for up to 90 days, after which you can apply inside Thailand for the one-year retirement visa extension. Applying at a US Thai consulate first is the usual procedure because you must enter Thailand on a qualifying visa before converting to the one-year Non-Immigrant O-A retirement visa. This initial application requires submitting your documents, including proof of age, financials, FBI clearance, medical certificate, and health insurance at the consulate. Once in Thailand with this initial visa, you follow the process for conversion or extension to the one-year retirement visa at immigration offices domestically. -- Is this all correct? It is going to be a pain in the neck to go to DC to get my visa, which I understand is where I would need to go. Also, It looks like I need Thai health insurance when I apply for the visa.

You can apply for a non immigrant Thai visa outside of your country of nationality. It may be difficult if you’re on a tourist visa but anything else that comes with at least temporary residency should be fine

In order to open a bank account you need to enter on Non O which you can extend in country. Then you do the one year extension in country once you meet the banking requirements. You used to be able to enter on a visa exempt or tourist visa, open an account and switch in country but with the recent banking changes even agents are struggling to open bank accounts. The Non O retirement does not usually require an police check. Post in the Thai Visa Advice Q&A group, it's tightly controlled and all the BS answers are deleted. Technically, you are supposed to be in, and remain in, the country whose embassy you select for your visa until it is issued. It's in the fine print that no one reads and if you apply in the US while elsewhere you are obtaining a fraudulent visa as you have lied on the application. The embassy can also chose to call you in for an interview at any point during the process. If you are in South Africa you need to check if you can apply through them and what their requirements are for Non O - retirement. I don't use an agent but know people who have successfully dealt with Thai Visa Centre. They can at least give you some guidance.

What you wrote is correct, and you can no longer do it in Thailand as your friend and others wrote. In the past, pre 2025, you could open a bank account on your own as visa exempt, tourist, ED, DTV,or through an agent. But that all came to a halt to crack down on scams and unless you're on a Non-immigrant visa type you won't be able to open a bank account, not even with an agent, which is a requirement to convert to a Non-O retirement visa. So for the above reason, you have to get it outside Thailand from a consultant in your country. But, you should be able to apply in the country you're currently in, even being American. People from all countries head to Lao, Vietnam, KL and so on to get a DTV, so this should be no different
