Arcade

Songthaew Questions as a Tourist I am trying to read about Songthaew and I am a bit confused on some things. I understand that the red one roams around the city and it seems like its route is only within the city. My questions are: 1. What does the "city" mean? Chiang Mai seems to have a square-ish "border" going on surrounded by what seems to be a river. Is that what city means? Does this mean that the red Songthaew only roams around this area and not outside the "square" 2. Say I am going to places outside it, like Huen Muan Jai or Lemongrass from within the city center, which one should I try to catch? 3. Can i confirm that you pay at the driver side once you exit for all songthaews regardless of which songthaew it is? Bonus question: Any Thai restaurant recommendation? Most of what I gathered are outside the square. Thank you.

Songtheaw, generally speaking, is a bus. So, they have a fix route from place to place (outer city). Except the red ones they act like a taxi. A shared taxi. So, you’ll need to talk to the driver first about destination and fare. They can pick up other passengers along the way. 1. The city means around Mueang Chiang Mai District (not by river/moat. See clear area in google maps just search the district name). Technically they can go anywhere you want if you willing to pay the fare but within the city is cheaper. 2. Red one. Other transportation services might be more convenient and fair e.g. Grabs, Bolt. Usually, red songtheaw charges foreigner more than locals. Or you can learn about City actual Bus called RTC Chiang Mai City Bus. But I don’t they it takes you to Huen Muan Jai. 3. You can pay on either sides. They can reach out and footpath side is safer. Just make sure to ask for the total fare before you hop on and prepare the exact amount of money when paying for more convenience. Rent a bike or car is easier.

1. Yes 2. Yes, yes and unfortunately they mostly use by locals to travel from outer district to the city to work so, there are little information online. Unless you can speak northern dialect, it will be a bit of a challenge. 10 - 50 baht seems about right depending on the distance where you get off. Fix route car won’t charge you more for being a foreigner 😆

Songthaew outside of city? Just got to Chiang Mai yesterday so having my first experiences with Songthaew’s. I know that you can ask the driver for a private transfer but I’m wondering how likely a driver would be to take us outside of the city (private or not). We’re looking at going to places like Royal Park Rajapruek, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and Huay Tueng Thai Reservoir. Also hopefully Doi Inthanon Park but that’s way further. Any info would be helpful - do I just ask like regular and they may or may not say yes? Should I ask for a price before I get in or just wing it?

Songthaews are meant for taking up to 10-12 passengers. They are the cheapest option when going on fixed routes. The red songthaews run fixed routes in Chiang Mai -- say, around the moat, or to Nimman, etc. Those are 30 baht to take, and go on pre-determined fixed routes. There are other colored songthaews -- yellow, blue, white -- which go outside of the city. These are also cheap, but they are not meant for tours. Think of them as a bus that will go on a pre-determined route to a distant place, stopping at villages along the way. Your best bet is a tour or a taxi or a Grab driver that you meet where you can negotiate a rate.

Huay Tueng Thai Reservoir has songthaew that service it, but you can catch a grab to get there for cheap.

They will always name a price. I got one to take us to 4 temples for a full day for 800 baht, but we gave him 1100.
