   paying for scooter rental flood damage? *please no hate on this post—i’m just asking because I genuinely don’t know* I rented a scooter for 1 month and am currently staying in one of the worst affected areas from the floods. The rental company for my scooter came and picked it up once the water subsided last night but he is saying it will be around 5-10k baht to fix everything. Is it normal for the company to charge you for flood damage even though it was obviously out of my control? Once again, no disrespect at all. I understand that they still have to make money and it is a small business. I was honestly just a little surprised.

      Did the rental company reach out to you about the incoming floods? The usual thing to do is to get the vehicle to higher ground and personally I do think some of that responsibility falls on you. When the floods came you could've moved the scooter elsewhere? Just my two cents. The repair bill seems reasonable if the scooter was partially or completely submerged, as in the engine and electrical components.

      My friends bike was under the water for 2 days. Yamaha quoted him 400 to clean out the crank case. 5-10k seems high.

      Ask them for an itemised bill for the repair, should breakdown each thing being done and the repair cost then take it to the dealership and show them the bill and we what they say if you have doubts.

      Yes it’s reasonable for you to be responsible for an incident while the bike was in your care, even if it wasn’t your fault. Incredibly difficult to comment on price. Some issues can be fixed for 500 baht, some issues will cost thousands. Also depends.. was this a 150cc+, a near new bike, etc? I’d probably offer to meet at dealership and settle directly. You’ll pay slightly more than the local mechanic but guaranteed to pay the honest price. To be honest though I haven’t heard of many incidents in Chiang Mai with scooter shops getting too out of line. It’s common in the south.

      Legit company, business insurance ... Surely you're joking here. Wife is a former auditor for the commercial division of Virayah - says extremely unlikely that a local hire company would take out full insurance with each policy costing up to a third of the vehicle's valuation. Even private full insurance for a 70,000 baht scooter, new - it's immediately devalued to 55,000. Policy 6,000 plus excess 5,000. That's the quote I received from Roojai.

      Same thing. If its newer maybe closer to 25k. A rental shop gets these things at close to wholesale, often has their own in house mechanic and plenty of spare parts. Check to see if your travel insurance or credit card will cover it.

      Engine and everything are waterproof except the air intake. A flooded bike just needs crankcase empty of water. You do this by turning the bike upside down, unscrew the spark plug and take off the air filter, then turn the crank over and the water comes out the spark plug hole. Then spray some compressed air through the air box, change the oil and it’s completely fine. Just maybe needs a good cleaning

      You rented it and you need to return it in the condition it was given to you in. If you left it out to get flooded and did not take steps to move it to higher ground, its on you. That could be mitigated if you contacted them in advance, but really this is 99% yours. Own it and pay it.
