   I had a Grab scooter accident in Chiang Mai. Here’s what the ER, CT scan, and insurance claim actually cost me. I hope nobody here needs this. I had a scooter accident in Chiang Mai last month and wanted to share the actual costs in case it helps another traveler or expat later. This happened while I was riding as a passenger on a Grab scooter. We hit a bump, I lost balance, and both the driver and I went down. I had pretty bad road rash on one side of my body, but luckily no broken bones. I went to the ER at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. I arrived at midnight and waited about 15 minutes. The public ER bill was 337.5 THB total. About two weeks later, I still felt worried because I had hit my head and wasn’t wearing a helmet. I went to Sriphat Medical Center OPD for a private head CT scan so I don't need to wait. It cost about 6,000 THB. The biggest thing I didn’t know before is that Grab scooter rides include accident insurance through AIG. Grab contacted me after the accident and sent an email with the accident information, I needed to contact AIG myself to claim off, and mail them the originals. The reimbursement was eventually wired to my Wise account about two weeks later.

      Are you travelling outside your origin country? Do you have a major credit card like Visa or better yet Visa Signature? Try giving them a call, they might have travel and emergency medical benefits that will reimburse you the costs. Google credit card benefits

      For anyone wondering the included coverage with grab is up to 200k baht (400k if you pay for the optional additional cover). If you’re not wearing a helmet part or all of your claim may be denied. Grab insurance is a nice thing to have but a serious accident could easily see your medical bills exceed the policy amount so very worthwhile having an additional policy as well.

      I ask every time and it seems like only 40-50% of the time they have one. I feel bad turning the ride down once they are already there to pick me up (and realize that chances are slim the next driver will have one anyway) but then am just anxious the entire ride. At this point I’ve thought about just getting my own but kind of annoying to have to lug it around with you wherever you’re going.

      A police report should be done, should have been done. Any costs that aren’t covered by the insurance can be claimed from the driver, for example if you didn’t have a helmet driver is liable and the police will help you recover the money.

      definitely get the helmet and carry it around. Safety is way more important than minor inconveniences. and a proper full face one as well. the ones without visors offer very little protection. on the plus side it will cool you down in slightly in the sun!

      I ask them in the app chat if there's a helmet or not. If they say no, i say 'sorry, i cancel the ride'.

      Yeah and buy yourself a helmet. It's literally cost like 2 breakfasts and would be more hygienically than wearing drivers helmet with all the parasites and sweat from prev passenger, bleh

   My first week in Chiang Mai. Just watched a car crash into a motorbike. I was riding my motorbike in Chiang Mai today and witnessed a crash in the opposite lane. Didn’t fully catch who was at fault, but the driver was an elderly man, easily 80+, who looked incredibly frail. To his credit, he stopped right away and got out to help. Honestly though, he did not look like someone who should still be behind the wheel. The motorbike had two guys in their 20s riding without helmets. Luckily, the speed was low and they both got up quickly with what seemed like only bruises. In 25 years of driving in Sweden I never saw something like this, and in my first week here I do. I already knew about Thailand’s reputation for motorbike accidents, but seeing it firsthand made it hit harder. Not here to judge, just needed to vent the shock and remind anyone reading: stay safe out there. And for the love of god, wear a helmet.
