Bolt

Traveling while fat in Chiang Mai? I will be taking my first solo trip to Chiang Mai in a couple months, but I had some concerns with getting around without the BTS, etc. I saw recommendations to rent bikes, scooters, get scooter rides, but at 250lbs I am a bit concerned that these won’t be options for me. What is the best way to get around Chiang Mai if weight is an issue? Also, since this trip is for improving my health, if anyone has ideas on how to find meditation/health programs for October, that would be incredibly helpful. My weight mostly comes from stress due to my hormonal and physical medical issues, hence the need for a significant sabbatical to reset, so my doctors have advised against intense workouts like Muy Thai classes, but recommended a consistently calm and healthy lifestyle instead (eating healthy consistently [no skipping meals], calm workouts, weight lifting/body weight exercises, and a lot of sleep/relaxation). I have also read getting a local dietitian is an option but haven’t checked out the details… Thank you in advance!!

Despite how much they're talked about on Reddit, the average tourist to Thailand doesn't get on a scooter/motorbike once. They are the easiest way to get around, but they are by far and away the most dangerous way. You can use every other form of transportation. Grab/Bolt for cars, flagging down songthaews (red trucks), tuktuks, walking, etc.

Just get some good walking shoes and start walking a few miles a day before you go and you will be fine. Im 325lbs. No issues. We walk about 5 miles a day when in Thailand. Chiang Mai has Songthaews that are cheap and go lots of places. I eat like a pig when im there because there is so much cheap delicious food and I usually lose about 10 pounds per month.

Avoid tuktuk. You can literally use grab for everything. No reason not to

considering buying a tuk tuk instead of renting a scooter, am I mental? I’ve been in Thailand for a month now and I’m planning to stay for another five months doing remote work while bouncing between Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and a few coastal towns. I’ve been renting scooters which get expensive over time and honestly I’m a bit nervous riding in traffic here after a few close calls. Here’s my potentially ridiculous idea. What if I just bought a tuk tuk? I’ve seen a few tuk tuk for sale signs around and asked a local guy who said you can get an older one for maybe 80-100k baht. That’s roughly what I’d spend on scooter rentals over six months anyway. My thinking is it’d be way more practical for carrying stuff when I move between cities, I wouldn’t look like such an obvious tourist, and I could maybe resell it before leaving and recoup some cost. Plus I genuinely think they’re cool and it’d be a unique experience. The downsides are obvious. Parking, maintenance, fuel costs, and the fact that I have zero mechanical knowledge. Also no idea about insurance or regulation requirements for foreigners. I was ordering some tech accessories on amazon and alibaba last week and got distracted looking at tuk tuk parts which made me realize how accessible the parts market is if stuff breaks. Is this completely insane or does it make for a long-term stay?

I did it for a month with a 125cc, it’s obviously not as fast or comfortable as a big bike but doable🤷‍♂️

    2. parkingthru

You listed the downsides but not the upsides: no a/c so you can dress lightly, you breathe pure exhaust when stuck in traffic, you’ll be ejected if someone hits you so no worries about being trapped in the car in an accident, no shock absorbers so you get to feel the road, probably not allowed on major highways so you get to take the scenic route every time

A rant about Thai drivers. Yaaawnnnn.. I know I've been living in various parts of Thailand since 2015. I've also lived (retired) in Mexico, Vietnam and Indonesia (Bali) I'm now a (fit) 74 year old living in chiang mai Mai city on and off for several years The Thai driving here is getting much worse.. Right? I'm speaking from a pedestrians point of view... it's dangerous now to try to walk around the city! I haven't driven in years but from what I experience via taxi rides... driving skills here are worse than ANY of those afformentioned places. Just awful... from a pedestrian and car passengers pov. Sidewalks in chiang mai city are downright dangerous leaving little option but to walk the streets... I digress. This morning... I'm walking next to warorot (Kad Luang market).. walking at the very edge of the street... there are no sidewalks in this area... and a car heading.. at slow speed.. straight for me.. I assumed they would stop. Wrong. They kept driving! The driver got out of the car.. Picking up fruit the lazy c#w.. and laughed at me. I was pissed and gave her my best possible insults in a body language that any mor^n would understand. No apology... She giggles again. These situations now are nearly daily. Ive been hit here by moving cars.. Twice .. Once fairly seriously... The merc driver just kept driving. What the hell is wrong with "these people". My anger levels here are noticeably higher nowadays. So much so that quite often I opt not to go for a walk. So very pathetic that I have to think this way. Will I really leave chiang mai city because of this? I enjoy city vibes... So rice fields are not my style...

In town and driving/walking since 2014. I do believe it is getting worse and I pity the pedestrians I see out and about daily, especially tourists. Oh what could be, if CM was made more walkable. Not that hard to do either and an investment with fantastic ROI, but they'll never see it. One area of improvement: zebra crossings or pedestrians are respected more and more. Seen an improvement there.

    2. LegitimateTourist21

As a resident of Chiang Mai, I acknowledge my own driving imperfections. However, traffic congestion in the city is a multifaceted issue with numerous contributing factors. Many residents point to red taxis and ongoing construction projects as major culprits. Red taxi drivers often cite economic pressures and fierce competition as reasons for traffic violations. Municipal authorities attribute the disruptions to the necessary but often poorly managed urban development projects. Passengers also express various grievances regarding traffic flow. While finger-pointing is common, a crucial underlying issue is the inadequacy of Chiang Mai's road infrastructure to accommodate the city's growing transportation needs. Expanding the road network presents significant challenges, and solutions to one traffic problem often inadvertently create others. Therefore, prioritizing the development of large-scale public transportation systems, such as a subway, is essential for long-term traffic alleviation in Chiang Mai. (Edited by Gemini 1.5 Flash)
