(Night Bazaar)

Kad Na Mor

Chiang Mai - Underwhelmed/Advice? Hello all, I’ve been in Chiang Mai for a week - and, it’s a lovely city. There are some beautiful cafés and great spots for food, but I have to say I’m struggling to find things to do by Day Six. I’ve been doing gym/Muay Thai each day, and have checked out the big tourist hitters, like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Doi Inthanon and the Sunday market/walking street, but feel like I’m missing something. Nightlife is okay! But, as a solo traveller, struggled to meet people compared to Bangkok or the islands. Nimman has really cool bars but I don’t see an awful lot of mixing going on, between tables and small groups, and Old Town/Zoe Yellow seems backpacker heavy. FWIW - I’m 34. I feel like Bangkok is more my speed (loads going on, older crowd, more open socially) than Chiang Mai, which feels more reserved unless you are a 22 year old backpacker and want that type of crowd. This is not a criticism of Chiang Mai. It’s a lovely city. But, would love some tips from those that love it - things to do outside of drinking coffee/laying by the pool, now that I’ve seen the big sights, and some fun bars to go to which are social for a slightly/older solo individual? Thanks!

I second all of this. I have been to North Gate once in the last year and it was a big nope. Also try Soi Dog Blues or Troubadour. How long will you be here? There’s a guy who publishes a weekly list of events every Monday and my god. So many activities. Targeted to people who live here but you may find what you’re looking for.

We stumbled into Jerns randomly after doing the overnight summit hike of doi luang That place is incredible. Been back many times. Like, I haven't found better western food in cm in 8 years. All the sandwiches are so good.

How long are you staying in CM? I loved Chiang Mai but i was working during the day time so it took me longer to exhaust the exploration. I met people and found stuff to do through the MeetUp app. Or Maybe it was Groups. Regardless, you get the idea. I went a dance event in CM and met several people who became friends I stayed in touch with over time; and through another group found a free "tour group" hosted by a local thai guy that liked making friends and would show travelers unique sites.

i just did 1 year, never bored, made many friends, i dropped hundreds of pins on google maps and was still finsing new places up until the day i left.. i only went "Zoe" areas 3 or 4 times when friends insisted going reggae bar, which is okay, i just dont like the general Zoe area... It depends your taste. you can try some like Deep green Inchala Deaf shop Noise Cave Cave Nowhere coffee Pineapple Express there's hundred of places to make friends i thought.. I dont drink btw but will go bars for music and chill, and lived in private apartment so more peaceful. I would gym hop alot, as many give 60Bhat day fee, and also use Baan haad park, and often meet potential friends Also did some meditations courses where i met new close friends, the focus was on meditation not just to make friends, but naturally people connect... i must admit it took some time for locals to warm up to me, after couple months a few people i became more friendly with, and within a year a lotta local people were very chill with me and recognise me, even since ive left my friend there often gets asked " where is yourbother friend?!" It was casual making friends with other foreigners from day 1 until I left, and im fairly introverted, which is one reason i like CnX, i felt i could make connections and also be in my own bubble. Actually met alot of potential friends im just a bit fussy. i feel having a focus helps alot, im a travelling artist and would often meet others on my wave length. Maybe it's just not your vibe?

There's also a lovely old lady selling kanom jeen at worawot food market who's been there daily forever. It's a great meal and cheap and she's quite jovial. It's a pretty popular place now, so much so that another family have opened an identical poo up restaurant right next to her. She speaks a bit of English too.

What more can I do in chiang mai? I’ve done the night market, Saturday market, maya mall, the main temples, (off to do the Sunday market), seen the gate, seen the temple in the mountains, done the tuk tuk around the village and he took us to a silk creation area, honey place, and some random bag shop at the end I would love to do more here we have one more night after today, help?

As an addition, I really love Boy Blues Bar. It's at the night market, awesome place especially when it's a bit busy.

Party in Nimman. Motorbike down to the wood carving village. Go horseback riding by Doi Kham. Hiking trails by Huai Tueng Tao (I like the one that passes a waterfall and goes up to the helicopter pad). Coffee up in the Chang Khian hill tribe village. All the activities along the Samoeng loop (I like insect museum, atvs, lunch at the 4 Seasons and the amazing botanical gardens). The zoo is pretty decent. Etc, etc
