I live in Chiang Mai since I was 18. Every high season I watch the same thing happen. Tourists arrive, rent a scooter within two hours, and end up in a situation that was completely avoidable. I've been meaning to write this down properly for a long time. So here it is, in one place.

Listen to OP Don’t be like me Went to Koh Samui Rent scooter Crashed the second day Right arm & leg fucked up At least the medical clinic was sooo much better than Europe public hospital, I guess because it was private Less expensive than Europe

Your idp needs the motorcycle license endorsement from your home country, so without an actual full license back home, your idp won't include motorcycles

    3. afox1984

I wouldn’t be surprised if many think a regular driving license (or IDP but without motorcycle license) will suffice and get stung when accidents occur

I expected something like.. get used to pushing the button that resets your indicator don't trust anyone don't cut corners don't waver and drive in a straight line. look at where you're going don't drive in the middle of the road unless you have good reason to drive slow you're on holidays and don't need to catch a train expect others to blink left and go right, drive the other way to cut sections ..I could probably write 20 more of those just from stuff I see on the daily I like specific examples more than wear a proper helmet, have a license.. won't stick.. people have heard that a thousand times

Is it safe to rent a motorbike in Chiang Mai for beginners? Hi all, thinking about renting a motorbike to get around Chiang Mai, but I haven’t ridden one in years. How’s the traffic and safety for newbies? Any tips or places to avoid? Would love to hear your experiences!

Chiang Mai is definitely not a safe place to ride for beginners, and unless you have a motorbike license and quite a bit of experience, then I wouldn't recommend renting a motorbike in Chiang Mai. A lot of inexperienced riders come here and rent bikes and end up in bad accidents. If you are staying for a while, I would recommend doing a course with Honda Safety Riding Park and they can also help you get your Thai license. Then after doing the course and getting your license start riding around the more quiet parts of town before going on the super highway and other major roads. Also keep in mind that if you have travel insurance then it won't cover you if you ride a motorbike illegally. Even if you have a license, most travel insurance won't cover unless you paid for extra motorbike cover.

    2. VagabondingViking

Exactly. I've been riding here for 10 years and have seen countless inexperienced tourists in accidents and then doing a GoFundMe because their insurance won't pay (or they didn't have insurance at all).

    3. BadMiker

I live here and ride almost exclusively. I find it... Challenging and I have well over 400k miles of riding in my life. Is it hard to do? No. Are the traffic patterns and the movements of other road users complely chaotic? Absolutely. Riding / driving the wrong way? Yep. Crossing traffic without looking? Check. Joining traffic without changing speed or even remotely looking at what is going on? That too. If you are a confident, practiced, and responsible rider, CNX and Thailand in general is great riding. If you are green, maybe no. Can you do it and survive with no problem? Possibly. Would I bet on it? Nope. The Thai tattoo is a very real thing.

It’s not safe at all. A foreign friend was hit by an automobile driver. Knocked unconscious he was lying on the road. Spent a few weeks in the hospital. There were traffic cameras proving the automobile driver was at fault. The driver was ordered to pay only 5,000 baht but he never paid anything and did not have insurance. My friend ended up paying for all his hospital bills and he had to pay for the damage to the motorbike. He did not have his own insurance. I would say many if not most locals are against paying for their mandatory insurance. If they cause an accident, their first instinct is to run away. A Thai friend was driving drunk, crashed her motorbike and hit her head. Her brain was swelling so they had to cut her skull off to allow more room for her brain to swell. Eventually after the swelling decreased, they reattached her skull. She’s never been the same person.
