Last Free Day in Chiang Mai: Sticky Waterfall, Mae Kampong or Chiang Dao? I've been in Chiang Mai for almost 3.5 weeks, mostly training Muay Thai and writing. I'm using my last few days to explore more before flying home Sunday: I'm visiting a friend at Doi Saket Hot Springs and plan to be there for most of the day. I could potentially visit Mae Kampong Waterfall early that morning since it's about 30 minutes away, then meet my friend before lunch. Monday: Completely open. I originally considered Chiang Rai for the temples, but after visiting Wat Umong, Doi Suthep and Chedi Luang, I'm leaning toward experiencing more nature instead. Plus it's further away. I'm considering: * Mae Kampong Waterfall: possibly Sunday before Doi Saket. * Bua Tong (Sticky Waterfall): worth it, or overhyped? * Wat Ban Den: could combine with Sticky Waterfall since they're relatively close. * Chiang Dao: I love mountain scenery and wouldn't mind getting a budget but decent hotel with a great view, doing some writing, order out for dinner, and having a quiet final evening. But besides the views, is there much worth doing there? Important: I don't drive and don't have my U.S. license with me, so renting a motorbike isn't something I want to risk two days before flying home. I'll be taking the bus to Doi Saket and would need public transportation/Grab/private driver elsewhere. A few questions: 1. Which of these would you prioritize for nature/scenery? 2. How difficult are they to reach without driving? 3. Would doing Sticky Waterfall + possibly Wat Ban Den Monday morning, then Chiang Dao for the afternoon/night, returning to Chiang Mai Tuesday morning, be enjoyable or too rushed? Tuesday is just for packing and resting before my early Wednesday flight.

Just to note. If you are using public transport there is no way to go from the sticky waterfall area to chiang dao. You have to pass through chiang mai again. If you have a private car you can drive up through Phrao to Chiang Dao however.

To echo what others said, Chiang Dao is beautiful and you don't go because there's a lot of activities. I recommend it as a place to chill out, write, go for dinner in the evening, watch the sunset over the mountain etc. Make sure you stay the other side of "Giant Trees Alley". The main street in Chiang Dao is a bit louder and more local (though if you ever want to go for a bit more atmosphere and less of a touristy vibe it's still worth a little trip and there's some nice places). Oh and there's no Grab etc, arrange transport with your accommodation (I hired a pedal bike which was fun) and make sure you plan around the tiny shops and their opening and closing hours (which can be....idiosyncratic, and there's a lot of Buddhist holidays which lead to them being unexpectedly closed).

Yeah Canal road is nice, that’s the way we cycle back and go there via Mae Kuang Dam and over the suspension bridge (use to take a boat across the reservoir)

Staying in Chiang Mai on a budget, needing a cheap way to get to Sticky Waterfall Helllo, currently in Chiang Mai, wanting to go to the Sticky Waterfall but can't find any cheaper ways of getting there. Theres 2 of us and we want to go on 11th! For context, hiring a moped is out of the question as I don't have a license. Thanks in advance!

The best way to get from Chiang Mai to Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall without a car is to take Bus Songtaews to Mae Rim and then a taxi. Bus to Mae Rim takes 30 mins.

    2. Haawmmak

surely there are Songthaws running up and down the 1001. I feel like I blast past 900 evey time I head out that way on the bike. OP. Sticky Waterfalls is off the 1001 which is a major road, but it's 3.5km in from the 1001 to the carpark the cheapest option without a whole lot of fucking around is going to be to hire your own red songthaw. see if your hostel can organise it.
