Songkran Chiang Mai 2027: Dates, Where to Play and Rules

Songkran in Chiang Mai centres on 13 to 15 April 2027, when banks are closed all three days. Water play gathers around Tha Phae Road, while the Phra Singh procession and temple bathing are the calm side. Bring dry layers, and be wary on a motorbike, which featured in most 2024 crashes.

Do you want to get properly soaked, or watch a quieter temple ritual? Chiang Mai does both in the same three days, and you can choose before you land: the water fight packs Tha Phae Road, while the Buddha procession and temple bathing play out a short walk away. We recommend choosing one as your main plan for the day, because the crowds and the roads make combining them tiring.

When is Songkran in Chiang Mai?

Plan for Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April 2027: banks are closed on all three days. That Bank of Thailand list covers financial institutions, so read it as the bank holidays you will feel, not as a cabinet notice for every office. Songkran is officially a three-day national holiday on 13 to 15 April, but celebrations can start earlier and run longer. UNESCO recognises it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the North, including Chiang Mai, is known for extended ceremonies rooted in local tradition.

The next city programme is not out yet, so use the 2026 edition as your template:

What When in 2026
Provincial Songkran programme across the city 7 to 19 April
Chiang Mai Water Festival at Wat Chedi Luang (TAT listing) 11 to 13 April
Opening ceremony at the Tha Phae Gate square 13 April
Water tunnel on Tha Phae Road 13 to 15 April, 18:00 to midnight
Buddha procession Afternoon of 13 April

Checked November 2026.

Where do you join the water play, and where is it calmer?

The simple split is Tha Phae Road for the water fight, Wat Phra Singh and the other temples for the quiet side. The province itself runs two tracks: merit-making at major temples across the city, and party-style events such as the one at Central Chiang Mai Airport.

Tha Phae Road and the Gate

In 2026 a large water tunnel was built on Tha Phae Road for World Songkran Thaphae Chiangmai, and the road was closed to traffic and turned into a pedestrian water-play zone. The tunnel ran from 18:00 to midnight each evening from 13 to 15 April, so go in the evening if you want the full show. The city festival opened at the Tha Phae Gate square on 13 April.

Wat Phra Singh and the procession

If you would rather stay mostly dry, watch the Buddha procession. In 2026 it left from the San Pa Khoi junction on the afternoon of 13 April, crossed Nawarat Bridge, followed Tha Phae Road past the Gate and ended at Wat Phra Singh. Along the route people poured turmeric and acacia-pod (som poi) water over the Buddha images for a blessing; the gentle pouring is the point, not a splash.

After the procession you could still pour water over the Phra Buddha Sihing at Wat Phra Singh through the Songkran days. For the temples themselves, see the Old City temples guide and the page on Wat Phra Singh.

Wat Chedi Luang and the airport party

TAT listed a Chiang Mai Water Festival at Wat Chedi Luang on 11 to 13 April 2026. It is the quickest way to see a water event that sits inside the Old City, so check the listing again closer to the date.

What rules apply to visitors?

Play politely, keep it safe and respect the culture: that was the province’s own request to tourists in 2026. Courts of Justice said water and powder play must stay proper and respectful of other people’s rights, and the national road-safety centre told every province to enforce the law strictly in water-play and tourist areas.

Alcohol is where the law is explicit. Authorities ordered alcohol sales controlled, with no sales to anyone under 20 and prosecution of both shops and guardians who break it. An indecent act in public during Songkran, or online, may bring up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to THB 60,000, or both. Use that as your line for “do not touch strangers”, and do not rely on the crowd for cover.

How risky are the roads, and what if something goes wrong?

The danger at Songkran is less the water than the road. In the seven dangerous days of 11 to 17 April 2024, Chiang Mai province had 39 accidents, 45 injured and 3 dead, and motorbikes were in 74.36 percent of them. In 2025 the same period had 25 accidents and 6 deaths. Nationally, 486 people were injured and 95 died in the first three days of the 2026 period, mainly from speeding and drink-driving.

Roads stay wet and slippery through the Songkran days.

For you that means two decisions. Skip renting a motorbike for these days unless you are already confident on wet roads, and if you do ride, see motorbike rental in Chiang Mai for what a rental should include. If something goes wrong, ambulance Chiang Mai explains the number to call, and after a motorbike accident covers what to do next.

Police also set up a traffic-discipline checkpoint on Tha Phae Road, on the west side of Nawarat Bridge, in 2026. Expect checks around the busy zone.

What should you protect?

Your phone, your passport and your eyes. Seal your phone in a waterproof pouch before you step outside and bring a little cash. Leave your passport in your hotel safe, not in a soaked pocket. If you wear contacts, switch to glasses or sunglasses for the day. This is our own advice rather than an official rule, but it fits how wet the days get.

Crowds also attract the usual pickpocket and overcharging tricks, so skim Chiang Mai safety and scams before you go.

How do you get around?

Tha Phae Road was closed to traffic for the water tunnel in 2026, so plan to arrive on foot or drop off at the edge instead of expecting a taxi to the door. A donation-based option in 2026 was the moat e-tram, which ran from Central Chiang Mai Airport around the moat, with 9 stops, on 13 to 15 April, 14:00 to 20:00. Riders could donate as they wished.

Who Songkran suits (and who should skip it)

  • You want a street water fight: Tha Phae Road is the 2026 centre.
  • You prefer ritual to splashing: follow the Buddha procession and temple bathing.
  • Skip it if you hate crowds: Tha Phae Road was closed to traffic in 2026 and the roads carry real accident risk.
  • Skip renting a motorbike if you are not experienced: motorbikes were in most 2024 crashes.

When to go and how long

Banks close on 13 to 15 April 2027, but the 2026 programme ran from 7 to 19 April, so you can arrive early for temple events and still catch the big water days. Plan one evening for the water zone, since the tunnel ran from 18:00, and one afternoon for the procession on the first day. For weather, haze and heat around April, see best time to visit Chiang Mai.

Nearby and how to combine it

Pair a quiet morning at the Old City temples (Old City temples guide) with an evening on Tha Phae Road. Rooms fill early for the holiday block, so see where to stay in Chiang Mai and book as soon as your dates are firm.

Before you go

  • Lock your dates: banks close 13 to 15 April 2027.
  • Pick your side: Tha Phae Road for water, Wat Phra Singh for the procession.
  • Play politely and respect others.
  • No alcohol sales to under-20s.
  • Skip the motorbike on wet roads and save the ambulance number.
