Napa: English-led early years with a Thai-led option

Modern school building with balconies and a landscaped path in front, no people in view
Napa Chiangmai School main building.

Napa takes children from age 2 and runs two tracks: an international programme taught mainly in English and a bilingual one taught mainly in Thai, with English as a second language. Choose the international track if your child will move on to an English-medium school, and the bilingual one if Thai matters to you. The early years are play-based and run from pre-school to Kindergarten 3, with primary starting at age 7, so you can stay put for the first years of school.

Napa suits you if you want a larger campus and a school that continues past kindergarten. Ask for the current fee schedule when you book a visit.

Hana Christian International Kindergarten: full fee table, US curriculum

Hana Christian International Kindergarten building.

Hana is the clearest on money: preschool is THB 63,000 a semester and kindergarten 1 to 3 is THB 85,000. A new student adds a one-time THB 28,300, and lunch with two snacks is billed on its own at THB 6,000 a semester. The classes teach US Common Core standards in a play-based, hands-on style, and a day runs 8:20 AM to 4:00 PM.

If your child needs a visa, Hana spells it out: the Student ED visa is free and the accompanying Non-O visa is THB 2,000. Tuition has to be paid in full for the year first. Hana is a Christ-centred school, with a biblical perspective in every lesson, so skip it if you want a secular setting. To visit, send an email; it replies within 1 to 3 business days.

SiLA Christian Kindergarten: the nursery at age 2, meals in the price

SiLA is the gentlest start for a 2-year-old: the nursery has a Thai homeroom teacher and English comes in through play and routines. From kindergarten the balance shifts, with about 80% of learning in English on an American early-childhood curriculum. Nursery is THB 29,000 a semester and kindergarten THB 34,000, and meals and snacks are part of that.

Budget for the first semester separately, because a new family pays one-time fees on top, which brings the kindergarten total to THB 44,400 and the nursery total to THB 39,400. SiLA presents itself as a Christian kindergarten, so it suits families who are comfortable with that.

KiDO: toddler to age 6 in English, Waldorf-inspired

KiDO fits a family with a toddler and a pre-schooler who want one place for both: it is an English-speaking nursery and preschool for ages 1 to 6. The day follows a Waldorf-inspired method with a nature connection, and the kitchen serves organic home-cooked meals and snacks in a mixed-age, home-like setting.

Skip it if you want a school that continues into primary, since this is an early-years programme. KiDO runs a long day, with the Chiang Mai branch listed from 8 AM to 6 PM on weekdays.

Piumrak Nursery: three languages, long hours, a camera on the room

Piumrak is the pick if you work a full day and want a nursery that opens early: the Maps hours run 7 AM to 6 PM on weekdays. It looks after children aged 1 to 6 and builds communication skills in Thai, English and Chinese with Thai and native teachers. Parents can watch their children on an online CCTV system through a mobile app and website.

Discipline and virtue are set on a Christian basis, so it is not the choice if you want a secular nursery. Choose Piumrak for the three languages and the long hours.

Sunshine calls itself a bilingual kindergarten school in Chiang Mai, and its curriculum covers seven learning areas, starting with communication and language. It sits in Hang Dong, so it suits a family who already lives on that side of the city and wants a school close to home. Ages, hours and fees are not set out, so ask before you visit and compare with Hana, the other Hang Dong school here.

International schools that start at age 2

If you plan to stay for school age, a through-school avoids a change at 6, and several international schools take two-year-olds. Lanna’s Early Years band covers ages 2 to 4, and SBS includes ages 2 to 5. Meritton welcomes pupils from 2 to 16, from Pre-Nursery to Year 11, and Prem’s Early Years programme is for ages 2.5 to 5. Curriculum, fees and areas for ten schools are in international schools in Chiang Mai and the fees guide.

Getting to the school and fitting it into your week

These schools sit in different parts of the city, so decide how you will do the school run before you pick. Read getting around Chiang Mai for the options, and Grab vs Bolt in Chiang Mai if you plan to use a ride app. If you are still choosing a district, Hang Dong is the place to start, and Chiang Mai with kids covers what to do with the children after school.

How we picked: every school scores well on Google Maps, and facts come from each school’s own pages.
